Biography

In 1980, the future Dr. Provenzale, Jr. enrolled as a biology major at Benedictine University. In addition to rigorous study schedule, he played both on the soccer team and held the position of lead trumpeter for the college jazz band during his four years as an undergraduate, also spending one year student-teaching in the Organic Chemistry laboratory. Most notable, however, was an active participation in Student Government, where he held numerous positions throughout college. This culminated in his election to the office of Student Body President, and serving in that capacity during his senior year.

The following four years he attended Loyola University School of Dentistry, an outstanding student graduating near the top of his class. During that time he was employed as a dental laboratory technician fabricating crowns, bridges, and dentures and as a musician on the weekends. After completion of Dental School, he was offered and accepted a position for medical residency training in Anesthesiology at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. There he was responsible for administering anesthesia (general anesthesia, spinal and epidural anesthesia, IV sedation, regional and local anesthesia) for all types of surgery and obstetrics, with additional responsibilities caring for patients in the surgical ICU. Additionally during this time, he conducted several clinical anesthesia research projects on the subjects of intra-operative blood pressure and airway management.

After medical residency Dr. Provenzale returned full-time to the dental field. Being one of a minority of dentists at the time to recognize the dramatic potential of Implant Dentistry, focused much of his time and energy gaining knowledge and experience in the field. In 1991, Dr. Provenzale, Jr., began restoring dental impants (prosthetic phase).  By 1994, he was became involved in implant placement and bone grafitng(i.e. surgical phases). Since that time, he has placed and restored hundreds of dental implants and was awarded Associate Fellowship in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry in 2003. Over the years, he has become a respected clinician and lecturer, and is counted among the leaders in the field of comprehensive Implant Dentistry in the Chicago area. He is presently only one of two dentists in Illinois to hold examination-certified credentials in both the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Additionally, he is uniquely qualified in the field of dental implant oral reconstruction—possessing the necessary competence in both the surgical and prosthetic phases of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Provenzale Jr. now focuses much of his practice on complex comprehensive oral rehabilitation.

On a more personal note, his love of music, and for the trumpet in particular, led him to performing on trumpet ‘professionally’ (that is, initially, for food) by age sixteen, and he continues, albeit sporadically, to the present. (Interestingly, he has still never been known to turn down a free meal.) Most recently, he played on the debut album CD of one of Chicago’s top party/fest bands, Hurricane Gumbo, with whom he still plays occasionally under the band-imposed moniker “Dr. Maybe”, reflecting his infrequent appearances in their shows. He can also be heard on the just-released Steve Mayfield album, Afterlife Crisis. During the early 90’s Provenzale toured Europe with blues singer and Ichiban Records recording artist, Charles Wilson. He also worked several years with the Steve Grobl Orchestra (Big Band), the Blue Wailers (Rhythm & Blues), Street Corner Blue (Blues), Grand Avenue Band (Jazz), Moonlighters (Jazz), the Houndz (60’s & 70’s rock), and the Rockin’ Docs, an all-doctor musical group, to name a few. He also serves as the perennial brass accompaniment of a local Christmas Choir for Handel’s Halleluiah Chorus.

After giving up soccer due to a knee injury following college, he returned to his first sports passion, ice hockey. In 1994, he was fortunate enough to play on the Illinois State Amateur Hockey championship team. Unfortunately for him (but apparently not for his team), however, he missed the championship game touring with Charles Wilson. Undaunted, he continues to play hockey several times a week in a futile attempt recover lost glory.
