Upon
graduation from high school (Benet Academy, Lisle, IL), the future
Dr. Provenzale, Jr. enrolled as a biology major at Benedictine
University. A busy student, he was a student
teacher for Organic Chemistry laboratory, and played both on the
soccer team and held the position of lead trumpeter for the college
jazz band during his four years as an undergraduate. Most
notable, however, was his participation in Student Government,
where he held numerous positions, culminating in his serving as
Student Body President his senior year.
The
following four years he attended Loyola University School of
Dentistry, an outstanding student graduating near the top of
his class. During that time he also
worked as a dental laboratory technician fabricating crowns and dentures for
his father, Dr. Provenzale, Sr, and, of course, as a musician on the weekends.
After
completion of Dental School, he accepted a position for medical
residency training in Anesthesiology at Illinois Masonic Medical
Center in Chicago. There he was responsible
for administering anesthesia (general anesthesia, IV sedation, spinal and epidural
anesthesia, regional and local anesthesia) for all types of surgery, with additional
responsibilities for patients in the surgical ICU. Additionally he conducted
several clinical anesthesia research projects relating to intra-operative blood
pressure and airway management.
Since
that time, he has continued to amass an enormous amount of dental
continuing education, giving him proficiency within an exceptionally
broad scope of dental disciplines. As such, Dr. Provenzale Jr.
has focused much of his practice on complex comprehensive oral
rehabilitation, with an emphasis on dental implants.
His
love of music, and for the trumpet in particular, led him to
performing on trumpet ‘professionally’ (i.e. initially for free food) by age sixteen,
and he continues (albeit sporadically) to the present. (Interestingly,
he has still never been known to turn down a free meal.) Most recently,
he played on the debut album CD of one of Chicago’s top party/fest bands,
Hurricane Gumbo, with whom he still plays occasionally under the band-imposed
moniker “Dr. Maybe”, reflecting his infrequent appearances in their
shows. He can also be heard on the just-released Steve Mayfield
album, Afterlife
Crisis. During the early 90’s Provenzale toured Europe with
blues singer and Ichiban Records recording artist, Charles Wilson. He also
worked several years with the Steve Grobl Orchestra (Big Band), the Blue Wailers
(Rhythm & Blues), Street Corner Blue (Blues), Grand Avenue Band (Jazz), Moonlighters
(Jazz), the Houndz (60’s & 70’s rock), and the Rockin'
Docs, an all-doctor musical group, to name a few. He is also the perennial
brass accompaniment of a local Christmas Choir for Handel’s
Halleluiah Chorus.
After
giving up soccer due to a knee injury following college, he returned
to his first sports passion, ice hockey. In 1994, he was fortunate enough to play on the Illinois
State Amateur Hockey championship team. Unfortunately for him (but apparently
not for his team), however, he missed the championship game touring with Charles
Wilson. Undaunted, he continues to play hockey several times
a week in a futile attempt recover lost glory.
